On Wednesday at 9:02 a.m. the National Weather Service released an updated fire weather watch valid for Thursday between noon and 6 p.m. for Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties.
Expect winds to be south 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity as low as 10 to 15%.
“Critical fire weather conditions associated with breezy south winds and very low humidity are forecast behind a pronounced dryline Thursday afternoon. A fair amount of uncertainty persists with regard to the eastern extent of the dryline on Thursday. At this time, locations along and south of I-70 in eastern Colorado and adjacent Kansas border counties appear to be most at-risk,” according to the NWS. “Unpredictable fire behavior. Any fires that develop may rapidly grow and spread out of control.”
According to the NWS, a fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are possible. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag warnings.
