A 5.1 magnitude quake occurred close to Vallenar on Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor, which jolted the area at 12:06 UTC (07:06 local time), was centered approximately 120 km northwest of Vallenar. It occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Closeby area hit by two tremors over the week
In the past week, there have been two tremors exceeding magnitude 2.5 centered in the region. Both were registered in the same area where the larger one was a 5.2 earthquake that occurred prior to this quake. The other, of magnitude 4.3, hit on Jun. 11.
