Update: July 9 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake reported close to Shirahama, Japan

NISHIMURO DISTRICT, Wakayama — A 5.0 magnitude quake hit near Shirahama on Thursday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted at 12:58 UTC (21:58 local time), with its epicenter approximately 57 km south-southwest of Shirahama and a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.
