Update: Seismic activity on Sept. 6 – 5.2 magnitude earthquake close to Nikolski, AK recorded

ALEUTIANS WEST CENSUS AREA, AK — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.2 magnitude quake occurred near Nikolski Saturday morning.

The tremor, which hit the area at 8:40 p.m. (9:40 a.m. local time), was centered roughly 49 miles southwest of Nikolski. It occurred at a depth of 21 miles.

The National Tsunami Center issued a Tsunami statement related to the earthquake, please visit tsunami.gov for the latest information.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, the region has experienced 10 earthquakes with a magnitude 2.5 or greater, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest, measuring 6.0, hit the same region three days ago.
