The tremor, which hit the area at 07:10 UTC (18:10 local time), was centered about 136 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It occurred at a depth of 35 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.8 event, but later upgraded it to 5.9.
