Update: Aug. 18 – 5.6 magnitude earthquake detected close to Hihifo, Tonga

NIUATOPUTAPU, Niuas — A 5.6 magnitude quake was registered close to Hihifo Monday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted at 07:48 UTC (19:48 local time), with its epicenter located about 122 km east-northeast of Hihifo and a depth of 89 km.

Past week’s quake

Over the last week, there has been one more tremor of magnitude 5.5 centered in the area. Six days ago, it was also reported near Hihifo.
