Update: Earthquake hits region close to Attu Station, AK on March 17 – 5.3 magnitude detected

ALEUTIANS WEST CENSUS AREA, AK — A 5.3 magnitude quake occurred near Attu Station on Tuesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor jolted the area at 4:21 p.m. (4:21 a.m. local time). It occurred at a depth of 6 miles with the epicenter about 142 miles east-southeast of Attu Station.

During the past week, there have been 31 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby. The biggest, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake, rattled the same region on Mar. 13.
