YAKUTAT CITY AND BOROUGH, AK — the U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.1 magnitude quake shook near Yakutat at midday on Saturday.

It was reported that a tremor struck the region at 8:51 p.m. (11:51 a.m. local time). The epicenter was located approximately 55 miles north-northeast of Yakutat, at a depth of 7 miles. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.3 event, but later downgraded it to 5.1.

So far, the agency has collected 13 online responses from individuals reporting that they experienced the quake. Weak shaking has been registered and several residents reported experiencing the tremor in and around the Juneau area according to the USGS DYFI report.

Two quakes, greater than magnitude 5.5, have been recorded nearby over the last week. The more significant, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, was detected close to 2025 Hubbard Glacier Earthquake prior to this quake. The other, a 5.2 magnitude quake, occurred near Yakutat on December 6.
