Dust storm warning in place for Kit Carson County early Saturday evening

The National Weather Service released a dust storm warning at 5:08 p.m. on Saturday in effect until 5:45 p.m. for Kit Carson County.

“At 5:07 p.m., a wall of dust was along a line extending from near Bonny Reservoir to 16 miles north of Cheyenne Wells, moving east at 30 mph,” explains the NWS. “Dangerous life-threatening travel.”

The warning is for Burlington, Kanorado and Ruleton. This includes the following highways: Interstate 70 in Kansas between mile markers 0 and 15. Interstate 70 in Colorado between mile markers 435 and 450. Highway 385 between mile markers 176 and 206, and near mile marker 211.

The NWS comments, “Dust storms lead to dangerous driving conditions with visibility reduced to near zero. If driving, avoid dust storms if possible. If caught in one, pull off the road, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake.”
