An updated dust storm warning was issued by the National Weather Service on Tuesday at 5:12 p.m. in effect until 6:15 p.m. for Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Huerfano and Rio Grande counties.
“At 5:10 p.m., a dust channel was near Alamosa East, or near Alamosa, moving south at 15 mph,” states the NWS. “Highway 17, Highway 160, Highway 285.”
Locations impacted by the warning include Alamosa, San Luis Valley Airport, Monte Vista, Sanford, La Jara, Blanca, Alamosa East, Fort Garland, Blanca Peak and Bountiful.
“Dangerous life-threatening travel,” explains the NWS. “Dust storms lead to dangerous driving conditions with visibility reduced to near zero. If driving, avoid dust storms if possible. If caught in one, pull off the road, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake.”
