A dust storm warning was released by the National Weather Service on Saturday at 7:18 p.m. in effect until 8 p.m. for Kit Carson and Yuma counties.

“At 7:17 p.m., a wall of dust was along a line extending from 8 miles northwest of St. Francis to 8 miles east of Bonny Reservoir to 9 miles northwest of Kanorado to near Burlington, moving southeast at 40 mph,” explains the NWS. “Dangerous life-threatening travel.”

Locations impacted by the warning include Goodland, Burlington, St. Francis, Kanorado, Ruleton, Bonny Reservoir and Bird City. This includes the following highways: Interstate 70 in Kansas between mile markers 0 and 33. Interstate 70 in Colorado between mile markers 431 and 450. Highway 385 between mile markers 181 and 201.

According to the NWS, “Dust storms lead to dangerous driving conditions with visibility reduced to near zero. If driving, avoid dust storms if possible. If caught in one, pull off the road, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake.”
