Update: Earthquake shakes region close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on Aug. 1 – 5.1 magnitude registered

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.1 magnitude quake occurred near Severo-Kuril’sk on Friday around midday.

The tremor, which hit the area at 01:53 UTC (11:53 local time), was centered roughly 117 km southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk. It occurred at a depth of 35 km.

Tremors past week

Last week, there have been seven tremors with a magnitude 5.5 or higher centered nearby. The largest, measuring 5.9, hit the same region one day ago.
