Be prepared for heat in South Texas until Friday evening

The National Weather Service issued a report at 4:29 a.m. on Friday for high temperatures until 6 p.m. The alert is for Inland Kenedy, Southern Hidalgo and Northern Hidalgo as well as Brooks and Starr counties.

“The combination of well-above normal temperatures and increased humidity values will produce Heat Index values up to 110 degrees for a few hours this afternoon across portions of Starr, Hidalgo, Brooks, and Kenedy counties. A few locations, especially along the Rio Grande River in Starr and Hidalgo counties, may briefly experience Heat Index values up to 113 degrees mid-afternoon. Remember to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and take frequent breaks from the heat. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles,” according to the NWS.

• The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas for outdoor workers.

• If someone succumbs to the heat, promptly relocate them to a cool, shaded location.

• In emergency situations, dial 911 for immediate assistance.
