At 4 a.m. Thursday, the National Hurricane Center released its first advisory of the day for the system, reporting that Tropical Storm Fay is in the Atlantic Ocean, 955 miles west-southwest of the Azores. The system, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, is moving west at 7 mph.

“Some slight strengthening is possible over the next day or so, with gradual weakening expected thereafter,” analysts wrote.

Fay became a tropical storm with sustained winds of 40 mph after intensifying from a tropical depression.
