Update: Earthquake of 5.3 magnitude recorded near Nikolski, AK on Sept. 3

ALEUTIANS WEST CENSUS AREA, AK — A 5.3 magnitude quake occurred close to Nikolski on Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor shook at 6:45 p.m. (7:45 a.m. local time), with its epicenter roughly 65 miles south-southwest of Nikolski and a depth of 6 miles.

Tremors last week

Last week, the area has experienced 71 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above. The strongest, a 6.3 magnitude quake, hit the same region prior to this quake.
