Update: May 16 – 5.2 magnitude earthquake detected close to Port-Vila, Vanuatu

A 5.2 magnitude quake hit near Port-Vila on Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS reported a tremor in the region at 14:07 UTC (01:07 local time). The epicenter was roughly 94 km east of Port-Vila, at a depth of 10 km.

Two tremors closeby last week

Two earthquakes exceeding magnitude 2.5 were reported nearby in the past week. Each was centered in the same area with the more significant — a 5.3 magnitude event — jolting prior to this quake. The second, a 4.6 magnitude tremor, shook on May 16.
