Fire weather watch issued for Central Colorado for Thursday – gusts may reach 40 mph

A fire weather watch was issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday at 12:30 a.m. valid for Thursday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. for Upper Arkansas River Valley including Lake County and Chaffee County, Fremont County including Canon City/Howard/Texas Creek and Southern Front Range including Sangre De Cristo Mountains/Wet Mountains/La Veta Pass.

Winds are forecasted to be west 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph and relative humidity as low as 12%.

“Fires will catch and spread quickly. Exercise extreme caution with any outdoor burning,” says the NWS.

According to the NWS, a fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are possible. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag warnings.
