A 5.1 magnitude quake occurred near Severo-Kuril’sk on Thursday night, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The USGS reported a tremor in the area at 12:48 UTC (22:48 local time). The epicenter was roughly 166 km south of Severo-Kuril’sk, at a depth of 27 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later downgraded it to 5.1.

Two quakes closeby last week
In the past week, there have been two earthquakes greater than magnitude 2.5 centered in the same area. The largest, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake, struck prior to this quake, while the other, measuring 4.3, was recorded on Mar. 19.
