At 12:37 a.m. on Sunday, the National Weather Service issued an updated fire weather watch valid for Tuesday between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. for Cheyenne County.

Residents can expect winds to be west 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph and relative humidity as low as 12 percent.

“For Sunday, southwest winds of 15-25 mph are forecast to begin around 8-9 am Mountain time across Yuma and Kit Carson county before expanding east into the remainder of the Red Flag Warning For Tuesday, low relative humidity and sustained winds around 40 mph could lead to extreme fire spread for any fires that ignite. southwest winds could change to west behind a cold front in the afternoon,” describes the NWS. “Dangerous and unpredictable fire behavior. Any fires that develop may rapidly grow and spread out of control.”

According to the NWS, a fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are possible. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag warnings.
