Earthquake of magnitude 5.0 recorded close to Shikotan, Russia on Dec. 18

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Shikotan around midnight Thursday.

A tremor hit the area at 14:42 UTC (00:42 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 108 km east-southeast of Shikotan and occurred at a depth of 40 km.

Over the last week, there have been four quakes of magnitude 2.5 or above centered nearby. The strongest, a 5.2 magnitude quake, shook in the same region one days earlier.
