Update: Earthquake shakes region near Honchō, Japan on Dec. 8 – 5.0 magnitude recorded

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake rattled near Honchō Monday morning.

It was reported that a tremor hit the area at 15:57 UTC (01:57 local time). The epicenter was located approximately 134 km south of Honchō, at a depth of 39 km.

Past week’s quakes

Two tremors, greater than magnitude 5.5, have been detected nearby over the last week. The more significant, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake, was registered close to 2025 Aomori Prefecture prior to this quake. The other, a 5.5 magnitude quake, occurred close to Hachinohe on December 9.
