On Monday at 3:36 a.m. the National Weather Service released an updated winter weather advisory in effect until 5 p.m. for West Jackson and West Grand counties above 9,000 feet.

The NWS comments, “Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, with higher totals possible north of Rabbit Ears Pass. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.”

“Snow covered roads will make travel hazardous, especially through mountain passes. Use caution when traveling,” states the NWS. “Slow down and use caution while traveling.”

Winter weather can make driving treacherous, leading to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and over 480,000 injuries each year. When traveling during snow or freezing rain, prioritize safety by slowing down. Be cautious of ice accumulating on power lines or tree branches, which can lead to snapping and falling hazards. If possible, avoid driving in such conditions. If you must venture out, opt for routes with fewer trees and power lines. Never touch a downed power line, and immediately dial 911 if you come across one.
