The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.1 magnitude quake hit close to Severo-Kuril’sk Friday morning.

At 18:41 UTC (05:41 local time), the region was struck by a tremor. The earthquake shook at a depth of 44 km, with its epicenter about 145 km east of Severo-Kuril’sk. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later downgraded it to 5.1.

Last week’s tremor

During the past week, another magnitude 5.1 quake was registered in the area, also occurring close to Severo-Kuril’sk prior to this quake.
