System name: Gabrielle

At 4 a.m. Monday, the National Hurricane Center issued an advisory stating that Category 1 Hurricane Gabrielle is in the Atlantic Ocean, 210 miles southeast of Bermuda. The hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, is moving north-northwest at 10 mph.

“… the center of Gabrielle is expected to pass east of Bermuda tonight”, according to forecasters. They also said “Strengthening is forecast over the next day or so, and Gabrielle could become a major hurricane tonight.”

Yesterday (Sunday)

Gabrielle became a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 90 mph after intensifying from a tropical storm.

Hazards affecting land

Surf. Swells generated by Gabrielle will continue to affect Bermuda during the next few days. These swells are now reaching the east coast of the United States from North Carolina northward, as well as Atlantic Canada, and are expected to continue through the early part this week. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
