The National Hurricane Center’s 10 p.m. Sunday advisory reported that the tropical storm named Gabrielle developed into a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 75 mph. It was previously forecasted as a tropical storm but has since gained strength. Category 1 Hurricane Gabrielle is in the Atlantic Ocean, 265 miles southeast of Bermuda. With maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, the hurricane is moving to the northwest at 12 mph.
Category 1 Hurricane Gabrielle is forecast to strengthen.
Hazards affecting land
Surf. Swells generated by Gabrielle will continue to affect Bermuda during the next few days. These swells are now reaching the east coast of the United States from North Carolina northward, as well as Atlantic Canada, and are expected to continue through the early part this week. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
