A 6.1 magnitude quake was recorded near the Kuril Islands Monday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor, which hit the area at 06:48 UTC (17:48 local time), was centered east of the Kuril Islands. It occurred at a depth of 9 km.
