Update: Earthquake measuring 5.0 rattles area near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on Aug. 1

A 5.0 magnitude quake was recorded close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at midday on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 01:00 UTC (12:00 local time), the region was struck by a tremor. The earthquake shook at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter about 178 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The magnitude was originally reported as 4.9 but later upgraded to 5.0.
