Update: Earthquake jolts region close to Shikotan, Russia on Aug. 20 – 5.1 magnitude reported

A 5.1 magnitude quake was detected near Shikotan Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor struck the area at 21:24 UTC (07:24 local time). It occurred at a depth of 41 km with the epicenter located approximately 74 km east-southeast of Shikotan. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.0 event, but later upgraded it to 5.1.
