Wednesday afternoon, a 5.0 magnitude quake was detected close to Severo-Kuril’sk, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor, which struck the region at 08:40 UTC (18:40 local time), was centered approximately 118 km south of Severo-Kuril’sk. It occurred at a depth of 74 km.

Severo-Kuril’sk area shaken by two tremors over the week
During the past week, two tremors greater than magnitude 2.5 have been centered nearby. Both were registered in the same region with the stronger — a 5.6 magnitude earthquake — hitting prior to this quake. The other, measuring 4.7, shook on July 30.
