System name: Chantal

The National Hurricane Center’s 4 am Monday advisory reported that Chantal’s journey: passing North Carolina and moving to Virginia. Tropical Depression Chantal is 70 miles east-northeast of Danville Virginia and 90 miles west-southwest of Newport News Virginia. With maximum sustained winds of 30 mph, the system is moving northeast at 15 mph.

“Little change in strength is forecast”, meteorologists stated.

Yesterday (Sunday)

Chantal became a tropical depression with sustained winds of 35 mph after intensifying from a tropical storm.

Hazards affecting land

Rainfall. Tropical Depression Chantal will continue to produce heavy rainfall across portions of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania today. Storm total rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, with local amounts up to 6 inches, is expected. An elevated risk for flash flooding will continue.

Surf. Life-threatening surf and rip current conditions are expected to continue at beaches along the U.S. east coast from northeastern Florida to the Mid-Atlantic states during the next day or so.
