5.5 magnitude earthquake jolts near Sand Point, AK on July 17

ALEUTIANS EAST BOROUGH, AK—According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.5 magnitude quake shook close to Sand Point Thursday afternoon.

The tremor hit at 4:30 a.m. (5:30 p.m. local time), with its epicenter located about 57 miles south-southeast of Sand Point and a depth of 18 miles.

Tremors past week

35 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher have been reported in the region over the last week, two of them larger than magnitude 7. The most significant was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake registered in the same area one day ago.
