Update: Earthquake of 5.0 magnitude registered close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on Jan. 26

A 5.0 magnitude quake was detected near Severo-Kuril’sk Monday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor rattled the area at 14:44 UTC (01:44 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 147 km east-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk and occurred at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.
