5.0 magnitude earthquake recorded close to Abepura, Indonesia on Aug. 14

SARMI REGENCY, Papua — A 5.0 magnitude quake was registered near Abepura Thursday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted at 06:48 UTC (15:48 local time), with its epicenter located roughly 191 km west-northwest of Abepura and a depth of 26 km.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, there have been seven tremors of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby, three of them larger than magnitude 6.1. The most significant was a 6.5 magnitude earthquake detected in the same region two days ago.
